Anacortes A La Carte
An Aussie Appetite Abroad
EAT & DRINK
To view all of my food/restaurant reviews, go to the Menu Page. But as a quick reference, here is my (ever changing) top five:
-
A-Town Bistro. Top notch gourmet creativity in a casual setting. Get the fries with the curry ketchup. Amaze.
-
Secret Cove. For a fantastic Sunday brunch at an incredible price with a great view! Kinda didn't want to tell anyone
-
Mad Hatter's Ice-cream. So many amazing flavours (even for soft-serve) including local bites
-
Anacortes Famers Markets - Almost done for the season! Get in quick on a Saturday
-
For a quick and delicious lunch I can't go past "The Market at Anacortes" and their salad bar, gourmet provisions, burritos and sandwhiches.
Currently drinking
-
Coffee from Strawberry Bay Coffee Co. (review) Cannot stand the others I've tried so far...
For a bargain, my recommendations:
-
$1 gelato cones at the Skagit River Bakery are perfect for summer
-
The $21.95 M-F 3-6pm early bird Sunset Dinners, at Anthony's. Four-courses! Get the burnt cream for dessert.
-
The Bistro-Trio; three-courses for $24 at the Majestic's 5th Street Bistro, especially if you're looking for a quiet night
-
$9.95 lunch buffet at Sher-E-Punjab. They even put the cricket on for us Aussies
SLEEP
We live in Anacortes, so obviously I don't have first-hand reviews but through the community, friends and family, I recommend trying:
-
The Majestic Inn & Spa - a really swanky escape right in the heart of town.
Now to sleep you first have to get here! Depending where you're from and who you know, here are some options
From Seattle
From Vancouver
-
Amtrak to Mt Vernon then Island Transit (Route 411W) to March's Point then Skagit Transit (Route 410) into town
-
Ferry to Victoria, Train/Bus to Sidney, Ferry to Anacortes (may have to be done with an overnight)
PLAY
So what does one do in Anacortes? At first we asked ourselves the very same thing. Instead of looking for the things you can do in any old town, I'm going to focus on the things that we do in Ancaortes especially. At first, they may seem boring, but give them a go and I promise you you won't miss your nightclubs and tourist busses . Though a cocktail bar wouldn't go astray here...
-

-
The MANY antique and thrift stores
-

Mr M. and I moved to Anacortes in January 2014 and we are loving experiencing everything Anacortes (and surrounds). It's comparitively a little place, but perfect for a long weekend getaway if you're from out of town. Below you'll find a list of my suggestions and links to posts about these very things.
